Mentoring

MMMS Mentor

  • The mentor must be a licensedM.D. or D.O. and a member of MMMS. They will agree to meet with the student at least 4 times per year. One of the meetings should be at the physician's home. They should be willing to give direction and encouragement. This is a one year commitment.

CHM/COM Preceptor

  • A preceptor must be a licensed M.D. or D.O. They must have a commitment to education. They must be willing to have medical students involved in their patient's care. They must be willing to evaluate the student's skills following their assigned time with a student. Time commitment can be as little as one day per week for 8 weeks. One to four students per year.

CHM Mentor

  1. Interactional Skills and IPPR are 1/2 of the Fall Semester each. Faculty only has to precept in one of them to be on the eligibility list for the mentor group. Interactional Skills is an 8 week, 2 hour per week course with some orientation and other hours for a total of 20 contact hours for the 8 weeks. IPPR (Intro to Patient Physician Relationship) is a 7 week, 2 hour per week course with one our of orientation for a total of 15 contact hours for the 7 weeks.
  2. Block I Mentor Responsibility For the Fall semester of Mentor Group, faculty must attend the Hunt Lecture. Then they will have a 2 hour debriefing session with their mentor group anytime during that first semester and one shadowing experience for each mentor group member (this can be with the mentor physician or with another physician if the mentor approves). Spring semester, there are two mentor group meetings scheduled at the discretion of the faculty and group. In addition, there must be a shadowing experience this semester as well. Summer semester there must be one mentor group meeting scheduled at the discretion of the faculty and group. The total mentor group contact hours for the academic year in Block I are 19.
  3. Block II Mentor Responsibility For the Fall semester of Mentor Group, faculty must attend the Hunt Lecture and schedule two mentor group meetings for a contact hour total of 8. There are no Spring semester commitments...students move on to a community based mentor group after that.
